Countering Antisemitism: Lessons and Resources

About This Collection

What Is Antisemitism?

Antisemitism, defined as hostility toward or discrimination against Jewish people, has been alarmingly on the rise in the United States. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) reported 8,873 antisemitic incidents in 2023, marking a 140% increase from 2022 and the highest number since tracking began in 1979.

This surge includes harassment, vandalism, and assaults, with a significant uptick following the October 7, 2023, attacks in Israel. Between October 7, 2023, and January 7, 2024, the ADL recorded 3,291 antisemitic incidents in the U.S., a 361% increase compared to the same period the previous year.

In response to this troubling trend, legislative measures have been introduced to combat antisemitism. The Antisemitism Awareness Act of 2023 (H.R.6090) was introduced in the House on October 26, 2023, and passed on May 1, 2024, by a vote of 320-91. This act aims to enhance federal efforts in monitoring and addressing antisemitic incidents.

Additionally, the Countering Antisemitism Act (S.4091) was introduced in the Senate on April 9, 2024. This comprehensive legislation seeks to provide resources and support for educational programs to counter antisemitic sentiments.

This collection offers comprehensive lesson plans and activities to support K-12 educators and parents in addressing antisemitism. These resources provide essential background knowledge and practical tools to foster understanding and counteract antisemitic attitudes among students. Educators can play a pivotal role in promoting tolerance and inclusivity by integrating these materials into the classroom.
