About This Lesson
Community Garden of Cultures is an integrative sustainability teaching resource designed for elementary classrooms in Alberta. Grounded in the environmental, social, and economic pillars of sustainability, this project connects garden-based learning with cultural storytelling to help children explore identity, community, and environmental responsibility. Through a 30–40 minute hands-on lesson, students choose a culturally meaningful plant, investigate its significance, and create a collaborative “Community Garden” visual display. This resource aligns with multiple areas of Alberta’s K–6 curriculum, including Science, Social Studies, English Language Arts, Health, and Arts Education. The project incorporates culturally responsive pedagogy, environmental literacy, and local/global food systems concepts. This document provides teachers with theoretical foundations, a complete lesson plan, implementation guidance, and sustainability connections. The resource is designed to be adaptable across K–6 and supports diverse and inclusive learning environments.
