About This Lesson
This handout had the Declaration of Independence on the left with a translation/summary of each section on the right. Modify it however you'd like, but I wanted my students to have a real world lens through which to analyze the Declaration of Independence, so I did three things:
1) I taught them all about the rights in the Constitution over a few weeks, specifically the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 8th, 13th, 14th, 15th, 16th, 19th, 24th, and 26th.
2) I had them read this article about Puerto Rico, annotating for which rights/Amendments they see being violated: https://www.npr.org/2017/10/13/557500279/what-does-being-a-u-s-territor…
3) I had them read this handout about the Declaration of Independence and annotate similarities between how the 13 colonies were treated by Britain and how the modern U.S. treats Puerto Rico.
