About This Lesson

STD Identification & Diagnosis Activity | Health Education Lesson | Aligned to HII.HD.4

This interactive, movement-friendly, and academically rigorous lesson helps students learn to recognize common STD/STI symptoms, understand prevention, and practice analyzing realistic scenarios — all while staying aligned to Utah Health Standard HII.HD.4.

This resource is a two-part STD/STI learning activity where students first complete a flow chart using a symptoms table, then use that chart to diagnose fictional patient scenarios. It includes flow charts, a symptoms list, diagnosis worksheets, and a treatment guide to help students understand symptoms, diagnoses, and next steps.

This resource includes two student tasks and full teacher guidance to support an engaging, responsible, and accurate health lesson.

What’s Included:

  • Teacher Instructions (detailed, step-by-step)

  • Flow Chart Worksheets

(with blanks for STD names, symptoms, or both)

  • STD Symptom Table

(print or project – designed to be kept separate during the activity)

  • Three Different Diagnosis Worksheets

(unique scenarios to discourage copying)

  • Treatment & Next Steps Chart

(for student reference)

Optional Extension: Intro slideshow + direct instruction before the activity

How the Lesson Works

Part 1 — Flow Chart Completion

Students receive a blank flow chart and a separate symptoms table. Using the table, they fill in missing STD names, symptoms, or both.

After completing it, the symptoms table is collected, ensuring students must rely on their completed chart later.

Part 2 — Patient Diagnosis Case Studies

Students receive one of three patient scenario worksheets. Using only their completed flow chart, they diagnose each “patient” and then use the Treatment/Next Steps chart to determine the appropriate response.

This reinforces accurate symptom recognition, memorization, and responsible decision-making.

Teacher Tips:

Encourages maturity and proper classroom tone during sensitive topics.

Emphasizes that activities are practice only and not medical advice.

Great for STD/STI units, prevention lessons, or review days.

Helps students make connections between symptoms, risk-reducing behaviors, and real-world impact.

Standards Alignment (HII.HD.4)

Students will:

Identify prevention practices for common STDs/STIs

Evaluate the effectiveness of abstinence and condoms

Analyze the impact of STDs/STIs on self and others

Understand responsibility for testing and informing partners
