To celebrate this holiday the U.S. Census Bureau shares facts and figures associated with this romantic time of year. The Day of Love – A History
• In A.D. 496, Pope Gelasius I declared February 14 as Valentine’s Day.
• Esther Howland of Massachusetts is given credit for selling the first mass-produced Valentine’s Day cards in the 1840s.
