About This Lesson

UPDATED for 2024-2025!

Check out this resource to help you celebrate diversity!

The U.S. population is becoming more and more diverse, and the need to embrace the many cultures in our classrooms is more important than ever. When a student’s learning environment respects their history, values, beliefs and traditions, students and their families are better positioned to thrive in school.

This annual calendar helps to regularly celebrate culture, diversity & inclusion with students. Each month, you’ll find a suggested day to celebrate that includes recommended resources from First Book and suggestions for a class, group or family-focused activity. You will also see month long observances, religious observances and added dates of cultural, historical or inclusive significance.

Being culturally competent—having the ability to successfully teach students who come from cultures other than one’s own—is critical to the success of our increasingly diverse student population and society.
