About This Lesson

This resource contains two complete, free lesson plans: “Twentieth Century Immigration Laws: A Story in Four Acts” and “The Evolution of U.S. Refugee Policy.” Designed to either work in concert or stand alone, these lessons delve into the ways in which the social and political context of the Cold War defined modern American immigration policy and dramatically changed the demographic makeup of the United States. They would enhance an existing Cold War unit or would fit well into a broader overview of American immigration across history. Also included is the essay An Overview of Immigration to the United States During the Cold War, which can be used with or without these lesson plans.
