About This Lesson

NGSS-Aligned Chemistry Video Lesson

MIT BLOSSOMS has created five video lessons to support STEM teachers by demonstrating the three-dimensional instruction required in the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Each of these lessons was developed around a specific standard, and the resources included in these pages are intended to illustrate the thinking that went into constructing each lesson to align with NGSS. We are hopeful that these resources will be valuable in guiding STEM teachers as they work to align their own classroom lessons with NGSS. We encourage teachers to refer to the BLOSSOMS Coaching Template (BLOSSOMS Coaching Template pdf handout below) which is designed to help them adapt their lessons by clearly defining what the students are doing and what the teacher is doing.

We also believe that these resource materials could be used as the basis for a Teacher Professional Learning (TPL) workshop for NGSS and have included a Workshop Facilitator Guide (Workshop Facilitator Guide pdf handout below), plus accompanying resources, developed for this purpose.

The lesson includes a BLOSSOMS video and the NGSS Instructional Resources for that lesson.

NGSS Instructional Resources for "CO2: Find Out What It Means to You!"

This lesson is a hands on introduction to the Chemistry of Climate Change. This lesson is designed using the 3 dimensions from the Framework for K-12 Science Education to align with theNext Generation Science Standards. In this lesson students will be engaged in several of the science and engineering practices (SEPs) and their thinking guided by questions and prompts using the crosscutting concepts (CCCs). This lesson was designed to have students engage with the phenomenon of the cycling of Carbon Dioxide in our environment, to explore the Carbon Cycle and the effects carbon dioxide gas has on the environment.

The objectives of this lesson are:

  • Students will generate questions from a video phenomenon
  • Students will begin development of a model of the carbon cycle
  • Students will evaluate and refine the model of the carbon cycle
  • Students will analyze and interpret data provided from an experiment illustrating the effects of CO2 on atmospheric temperatures

The Performance Expectations of this lesson are:

  • HS-ESS2-6: Earth’s Systems
  • Develop a quantitative model to describe the cycling of carbon among the hydrosphere, atmosphere, geosphere, and biosphere.
